Managing Notifications

OJS can notify you by email when new content is published or when the journal posts an announcement. You control which notifications you receive from your user profile.

Types of Notifications​

Submission and review notifications are automatic and cannot be disabled while you have active work in the system. This guide focuses on reader-facing notifications.

Subscribing via the Journal Homepage​

Some OJS themes show a Subscribe to Notifications or Notify Me widget on the journal homepage:

  1. Locate the notification widget in the sidebar or footer
  2. If you are not logged in, click Register or Login first
  3. Click Subscribe or tick the checkbox to opt in to new issue notifications
  4. A confirmation message appears and you are added to the mailing list

Managing Preferences in Your Profile​

For full control over all notification types:

  1. Log in to OJS
  2. Click your username in the top-right corner to open the User Menu
  3. Select View Profile
  4. Click the Notifications tab

Notification Settings Table​

  1. Tick or untick the checkboxes for each notification type you want to receive
  2. Click Save to apply your changes

Changes take effect immediately. You will not receive a confirmation email when saving notification preferences.

Unsubscribing from Notifications​

From Your Profile​

  1. Follow the steps above to reach View Profile → Notifications
  2. Untick the notifications you no longer want
  3. Click Save

From an Notification Email​

All notification emails sent by OJS include an unsubscribe or opt-out link in the footer:

  1. Open any notification email from the journal
  2. Scroll to the bottom and click Unsubscribe or Manage notifications
  3. You are redirected to your profile's Notifications tab
  4. Untick the relevant checkboxes and click Save

Clicking an email unsubscribe link only disables that specific notification type. Log in to your profile to review and adjust all settings.

Notification Frequency​

OJS sends notifications individually as events occur — there is no digest or batching option in the default installation. If a journal publishes frequently, consider disabling announcement emails and checking the journal homepage instead.
